Grain Characteristics and Color

Leather is a natural material with unique characteristics. No two hides are alike and you will discover many differences in the grain texture within each hide. As you live with your leather upholstery, you’ll notice subtle differences in the surface of the leather and in its coloration. Leather hides dyed in the same vat of dye will absorb color a little differently, giving a bit of natural color variation to your upholstery. These are the elements that differentiate real leather from faux, and they’re appreciated by real leather aficionados everywhere.

Patina and Changes in Color

Environmental factors can positively and negatively affect leather and may impact the color of your upholstery. Sunlight bleaches color and fades leather. We recommend keeping all upholstery out of direct sunlight. As leather is used, lighter colors naturally darken with age. This happens as the oils from our skin naturally rub off on the leather, creating a patina that is darker than the original color. Lighter nubuck leathers are particularly absorbent and will darken with use and over time. Patina is another wonderful characteristic that only leather can develop. If you carry a leather briefcase or purse, you’ll see evidence of patina in the areas where your hands connect with the leather.

Leather Foes

In addition to sunlight, ballpoint and permanent inks and sharp objects can permanently damage leather. Pet teeth and claws can also scratch or perforate the surface.

Leather Care

Leather requires very little care. We recommend dusting or gently vacuuming the surface of the leather as needed. If a liquid is spilled on leather, blot the leather with a clean, absorbent cloth. Follow this by wiping the entire surface with a clean cloth dipped in warm sudsy water and wrung out. Do not use solvents, oils, creams, or cleaning products on Casa Novalia leathers. If you have nubuck leather, you may want to purchase a nubuck leather brush or block available at your furniture retailer or the local shoe store. The brush or block (which looks like a large gummed eraser) can be gently rubbed across the surface of the nubuck to raise the nap on the leather grain. For more serious stains, we recommend the use of a professional leather cleaning service.
